What is Omeprazole?

 

Omeprazole, marketed under the trade names Prilosec and Losec, is a drug used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease, peptic ulcer disease and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. It is also used to prevent upper gastrointestinal bleeding in high-risk groups. It can be given orally or injected into the vein.

 

Discovered in 1979, Omeprazole is the World Health Organization's list of essential medicines and is the most effective and safest drug in the health system. It can be used as a generic drug. Omeprazole does not immediately relieve heartburn symptoms.

 

Cautions 

 

Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, headache and increased intestinal gas. Serious side effects may include Clostridium difficile colitis, increased risk of pneumonia, increased risk of fracture, and the potential for masking of stomach cancer. It is unclear whether it is safe during pregnancy. Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor that blocks the release of gastric acid.
