Newly discovered three genes related to Alzheimer's disease

Release date: 2018-05-25

Science and Technology Daily, London, May 23 (Reporter Zheng Huanbin) An international research team funded by the British Medical Research Council (MRC) identified three risk genes associated with Alzheimer's disease. The research results were published in the recently published Nature and Translation Psychiatry.

In order to find a genetic risk factor for diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, a commonly used method is to compare the DNA of a patient with the disease to a normal person to determine the genetic variation of the patient. About 30 risk genes associated with Alzheimer's disease have been discovered using this method. In the new study, a team led by researchers at the University of Edinburgh and the University of Queensland in Australia used a technique to expand the sample population for genetic analysis.

The genetic information involved in the study was taken from the British Biobank, with a sample of more than 300,000 people. Since most of them are too young to be diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, the research team looked at the medical information of their parents – many of whom are suffering from Alzheimer's disease. The research team analyzed the above data in depth and combined the existing genetic information of 70,000 people (including Alzheimer's disease patients and non-patients), and finally found three new genes that may cause people to suffer from Alzheimer's disease.

This new discovery helps researchers better understand the mechanisms of Alzheimer's disease and develop new treatments. Dr. Richardo Marioni of the University of Edinburgh in the United Kingdom said: "The new findings provide key clues to the biological processes involved in Alzheimer's disease. But the combination of genes is not the only risk factor for illness, we are working to bring people's genetics Learning data and lifestyle information to better understand the risk of Alzheimer's disease in a more comprehensive and personalized way, thus developing a targeted risk reduction strategy to pave the way for accurate treatment of Alzheimer's disease the way."
