Kazakhstan scientists jointly develop human bird flu vaccine

The Interfax news agency recently reported that Kazakhstan and Russian scientists have begun to jointly develop human bird flu vaccine.

The report quoted Yerlan Ramankulov, head of the Kazakhstan National Biotechnology Center, as saying that Kazakhstan experts had successfully developed avian flu vaccine for poultry in 2006, and recently worked with Russian counterparts to develop a human flu vaccine.

Ramankulov said that humans may be infected with bird flu from birds. When the epidemic occurs, human vaccines are especially important for those who are often exposed to poultry. However, he pointed out that the development of human avian influenza vaccine may take 12 to 15 years due to the large number of clinical trials required.

According to Ramankulov, the avian flu vaccine for poultry in Kazakhstan was put into industrial production at the beginning of this year.
