Western Australia chicken meat decree to be terminated at the end of the year

On December 24, 2010, Australian Agriculture and Food Minister Terry Redman stated that the 1977 chicken industry decree will be terminated by the end of the year.

Prior to Redman’s decision, the Australian Economic Regulation Authority conducted a related investigation. The agency proposed the termination of the implementation of the 1977 Chicken Industry Act, which requires an assessment of its effectiveness every five years. Considering that it is reasonable to continue the decree, the decree will be extended.

The 1977 chicken industry decree was a transitional measure to improve the stability of the chicken meat industry at a rapid growth stage.

Redman said that the previous decree played a good role in the late 1970s and early 1980s, but now it needs to be pushed forward. The investigation by economic regulators shows that the demand for chicken meat in Western Australia is growing, but production stagnates. .

In recent years, the gap between production volume and demand has been met by interstate imports. The strong consumer demand for chicken is a major opportunity. The state government will assist the chicken industry in seizing these opportunities.

The Australian Ministry of Agriculture and Food is planning an industry forum that will support the chicken industry and explain the government's role in ensuring producers’ profitability and opportunity.

Redman said that the Ministry of Agriculture and Food will work with the chicken industry to work together for the growth of the chicken industry. Collaboration includes inspections of new hatcheries, brooders and production equipment, assisting farmers in waste management and obtaining low-cost bedding materials.
