One-year or perennial herbaceous fern. The rhizomes are thick and short, lying underground, with black-brown roots. Eyes and stems upright, only the base part of the branch, hollow, knotted, the surface grayish green or yellow-green. The leaves are degenerate into sheaths, and they are wrapped in joints. The sheath base and sheath teeth form two black circles and there is a shallow groove in the center of the sheath. The sporangial spikes are topped, dense, oblong, pointed, sessile and 1–12 mm in length. The end produces spore leaves, rectangular, pointed at the top, shaped like a writing brush. Plants up to 100 cm.
The single branch of the stem above the ground is unbranched, hollow, and has ridges in columns. There are 2 rows of verrucous protrusions on the ridge, which are extremely rough. The leaves are sheathed and tightly packed. There is a black circle on the top and base, and the teeth on the sheath are easily detached.
3 Growth habits
Born in the shade and dampness of the slopes, wetlands, streams, hi and humid environment, sometimes born in weeds. Often born on a hillside wet or under a sparse forest. Potted plants need to be moved into the indoor winter of not less than 0°C in winter.
4 Distribution range
China is mainly distributed in Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning, Hebei, Anhui, Hubei, Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Gansu, Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang, and Qinghai.
Temperate regions of the northern hemisphere such as Japan, the Korean Peninsula, Russia, Europe, North America, and Central America are also distributed.
