The latest research progress of transgenic strawberry in the United States

According to the website of the Eurekalert Agency on March 13, 2006, researchers at Virginia Institute of Bioinformatics (VBI) and the Department of Horticulture at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute invented a new method to use Agrobacterium to efficiently bind specific DNA sequences. Transferred to wild strawberry genome in woodland or high mountains.
This method uses Agrobacterium tumefaciens circular DNA molecules (T-DNA) to introduce foreign DNA into plants. This method is not only convenient for researchers to study the functions of a large number of strawberry genes, but it is useful for improving the nutritional value of strawberries in the long run, and it is also very useful for increasing the number of antioxidants beneficial to humans.
Jessie Novak, the director and professor of horticulture at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute of Technology, commented: “In the past few years, scientists have worked hard to find an effective strawberry transformation system. But these efforts are to meet the genetic function of fruit crops. For large-scale research, it seems to be insufficient. The consistent method used by the researchers is to introduce foreign DNA into the important economic crop of strawberry, and to improve conversion efficiency by combining different parameters."
Hebold Odwink, a professor of plant pathology at Cornell University in the United States, has developed a technology for efficient apple transformation. He said: “The commercial strawberries that are familiar to most consumers are octaploids, In other words, the strawberry contains eight chromosomes.Using a related plant of strawberry, the researchers found that a special type of wild strawberry in the mountain is very easy to transform. This special type of strawberry has two sets of chromosomes and a small set of multiple genomes. Achieving this conversion rate is a result of technological innovation and close attention to the details of the experiment.Because this strawberry has a smaller genome, its regeneration cycle is shorter and the plant shape is smaller, the genome of this wild strawberry is for commercial strawberries. It is an ideal research model. Its rapid growth of root buds, the large amount of seeds produced, and the ease of planting make this strawberry an ideal candidate for large-scale study of gene function."
The new test method involves transferring the vegetative tissue of strawberry to the medium for natural growth and cultivation, keeping the three leaves of the strawberry able to grow normally. After 6-7 weeks of seed germination, these leaves can use Agrobacterium for genetic transformation. Since the transgenic strawberry is labeled with green fluorescent protein (GFP), the transformed strawberry crop can be easily distinguished by visual observation. This is the first time that such a study has used green fluorescent protein as a marker.
Professor Vladimir Schuluf of the Virginia Institute of Bioinformatics is also one of the authors of this study. He commented: "We have made progress in the strawberry trial program for researchers to change strawberries or other genes through the genome. This is an important milestone in the study of fruit crop traits. We are now able to produce a series of mutants that are significant not only for the discovery of new genes in the Rosaceae family, but also for the determination of these genes through high-throughput screening methods. The function also has incalculable value."
