Those who like protein powder, you actually make up too much to know?

In recent years, consumers’ love of protein has become more evident.

Starting several years ago, major food companies have marked the word “protein” on their snacks because many consumers believe that protein can make them feel full but their calories are not too high.

As this trend continues to increase, the sales of protein powder that entered the mainstream market in the 1990s have been increasing. According to Euromonitor, a market consulting firm, more and more people are interested in protein supplements such as protein powder. By 2017, its global sales volume will reach US$10.5 billion. From 2015 to 2020, China's sales of protein supplements will increase by 5% or more per year.

The history of protein powder products is not long. People at the beginning of the 20th century thought that weightlifters could have a good-looking body. In the 1960s, the protein powder invented by US veteran Bob Hoffman was sold to male bodybuilders and actors, accelerating muscle growth. Later, the formula was improved and replaced by convenience packaging, which became a product that was easily available for purchase and consumption by the general public.

The most common use of protein powder now is for the bodybuilder to supplement protein after high-intensity exercise, increase muscle and speed up muscle recovery. Compared with common meat such as beef and chicken, protein powder is simple to eat and low in fat, and has been sought after by fitness workers.

In addition to this, there are also people who feel that eating protein powder is full for a long time, so they like it.

But is it really a problem to add so many proteins?

According to the US Department of Agriculture's Food and Nutrition Committee, an average adult (89kg) requires 59g of protein per day, and women (68kg) need 50g of protein daily. The 2012 data shows that Americans over the age of 20 are actually male. Every day, 99g of protein is ingested, and women over the age of 20 consume 68g of protein.

In other words, the Americans have already eaten more protein than they need, and the food they eat everyday has already met their needs. They do not need to use protein powders and other products to supplement proteins.

Excessive protein intake is not only over-nutrition but also side effects. If too much protein is accumulated in the body, it will affect normal liver and kidney function and result in decreased immunity.

There is no specific data on protein intake in China, but the market research firm Mintel’s report shows that in 2014, a quarter of Chinese consumers increased their protein intake.

The overnutrition that exists in China is not the same as the United States. Chinese children with excess fat, that is, there is the so-called problem of obesity. The China Children and Adolescent Nutrition and Health Report released by the Chinese Association for Nutrition and Health Promotion shows that in children’s daily life, the ratio of energy supply to fat has reached 36.9%. In terms of fat, the national recommendation is 25-30%. Obviously children need to change their eating habits to solve this problem.
