EU 2.6 billion pounds for genetically modified or safer than traditional food

(Reporter Ma Li Wei Yan) How does Europe evaluate and regulate genetically modified foods? In this regard, Yang Xiaoguang, a researcher at the Institute of Nutrition and Food Safety of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention and director of the Microelement Nutrition Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Health, introduced the official website of the People’s Network today. The EU has spent 260 million pounds on the risk assessment of more than 50 genetically modified safety projects. The conclusions reached are very objective and scientific.

Earlier this year, in June of this year, Owen Patterson, Minister of Environment, Food and Agriculture of the United Kingdom delivered a speech to reflect on the European Union's genetically modified policy and supported genetically modified technology. According to the speech, the EU spent 260 million pounds on the risk assessment of more than 50 genetically modified safety projects. In the 2000 and 2010 European Commission reports, it concluded “two strong conclusions”: First, there is no scientific evidence that GM crops will The risks to the environment and food and feed safety are higher than those of traditional crops. Second, due to the adoption of more precise technologies and more stringent supervision, GM crops may even be safer than traditional crops and foods.

Yang Xiaoguang agrees with this view. EU countries have always been very cautious about GMOs and have strict management of genetically modified organisms. The European Union’s 2.6 billion pound sterling assessment of more than 50 genetically modified safety projects concluded that the conclusion is very objective and scientific.

Since the birth of transgenic technology, the debate surrounding genetically modified technology has never stopped. In particular, the debate over the safety of genetically modified foods has been the most controversial. "But after scientific confirmation, it has been overturned." Yang Xiaoguang said.

He explained that the safety issues of genetically modified foods are highly concerned by relevant international organizations, governments and consumers. International food safety standards are mainly set by the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC). This is jointly established by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO). It is the only international agency that coordinates the food regulatory standards and methods of member countries and establishes the International Codex Alimentarius. The food standards it has established are stipulated by the World Trade Organization (WTO) as the basis for adjudication of international trade disputes. Since 2003, the International Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) has passed four standards concerning the evaluation of food safety of genetically modified organisms.

According to international standards, the evaluation of food safety of genetically modified organisms in the world is mainly evaluated from the aspects of nutrition evaluation, toxicological evaluation of newly expressed substances, and evaluation of sensitization. Although the procedures and methods for national security assessment are different, the general evaluation principles are formulated in accordance with the standards of the Codex Alimentarius Commission, including scientific principles, comparative analysis principles, and case analysis principles. "The GM food must pass strict safety evaluation and approval procedures before entering the market, and it must be stricter than any previous food safety evaluation." Yang Xiaoguang said.
